Building Futures: Local Teens Construct a Dream Home in Bowie, Maryland

In the heart of Bowie’s newest neighborhood, South Lakes, a unique home tells a special story—not just of craftsmanship, but of opportunity. Built with the help of high school students under the guidance of seasoned home-building professionals, this lovely home represents more than just brick and mortar. It’s a symbol of dreams in the making.

Students from Bladensburg and Crossland High Schools spent their school year turning a blueprint into a reality. Guided by experienced supervisors, they handled nearly 70% of the construction—including carpentry, plumbing, and HVAC work.

“This project went great,” said Kirk Stiffler, who oversaw the build. “The students were involved from start to finish, learning each phase of the process.”

The result? A stunning 3,700-square-foot, four-bedroom home with thoughtful touches like ceiling fans in each room and a luxurious primary bathroom. It’s now on the market for $750,000, but hopes are high it’ll fetch closer to $800,000.

Recently, the young builders were honored for their efforts. Among them was Hugo Moreno, who received a $1,000 scholarship to pursue his goal of becoming an electrician.

“It was a great experience,” he said with pride. Fellow student Andy Mojano, who worked on the carpentry, added, “I actually really liked it. It was wonderful.”

Though it may be the smallest house in the neighborhood, it’s built with the biggest hearts—and will surely make a perfect home for a lucky family.
