In one of the most unexpected and delightful announcements in Maryland education news, the University of Maryland (UMD) has chosen none other than Kermit the Frog to deliver its 2025 commencement address. The ceremony will take place on May 21, 2025, at SECU Stadium, celebrating graduates from the Summer 2024, Fall 2024, and Spring 2025 semesters.
This isn’t just a fun publicity move—it’s also a heartfelt tribute. Kermit’s creator, Jim Henson, is one of UMD’s most famous alumni. Henson graduated in 1960 with a degree in home economics and went on to change the landscape of children’s media and pop culture through his creation of the Muppets. Today, a statue of Henson and Kermit sits proudly on the College Park campus, reminding students of the creative legacy born right there at UMD.
“Our pride in Jim Henson knows no bounds,” said UMD President Darryll J. Pines. “It is an honor to welcome Kermit the Frog to our campus, 65 years after Mr. Henson graduated from the University of Maryland.”
This announcement brings a dose of nostalgia, whimsy, and encouragement to what’s typically a formal event. Known for his gentle humor and heartfelt advice, Kermit is expected to bring a message of resilience, kindness, and self-belief—qualities every graduate needs as they step into the next chapter of life.
While this is Kermit’s first time addressing UMD grads, it’s not his first time behind a commencement podium. In 1996, he spoke at Southampton College and was awarded an honorary doctorate of Amphibious Letters.
In a statement released through UMD, Kermit shared:
“I’m deeply touched to be invited to speak at the University of Maryland. Nothing could make these flippers happier than celebrating such an inspiring group of graduates.”
A Moment to Celebrate Imagination in Education
Kermit’s presence reminds us that education isn’t just about grades and degrees—it’s about imagination, perseverance, and finding your voice. Whether you’re heading into the workforce, graduate school, or something completely unexpected, this moment from UMD reminds us that inspiration can come from even the most unlikely places—even a puppet with a banjo.
